3D Modelling and Printing - How to Guide

A preliminary guide to 3D modelling and 3D printing at Trent University

Printing Filaments

PLA is the main printing material used in the Odette creative studio and it's available in a high number of colours. The quantity of each colour may vary. The PLA filament colours currently available are:

  • Red
  • Orange
  • Yellow
  • Green
  • Blue
  • Pink
  • Black
  • White
  • Silver Metallic
  • Transparent

Tough PLA is the stronger version of PLA as it is less brittle and has a higher impact resistance, similar to that of ABS filament.. The Tough PLA filament colours currently available are:

  • Gray
  • White

Support Filaments

For prints with more complex shapes and overhang angles, breakaway material is used to fill the gap between the buildplate and a prints overhand to ensure the best print quality.

PVA is a water soluble plastic filament that is meant to preserve fine details and high complexity of print models, especially at smaller scales.
