3D Modelling and Printing - How to Guide

A preliminary guide to 3D modelling and 3D printing at Trent University

Printing Paramaters

To use the 3D printer, we encourage patrons to book a consultation by emailing library@trentu.ca or using our Booking Page. During the consultation, we will go over aspects like the 3D model file, the material and colour of the print, supports, infill, a timeline and any costs associated.

Files

3D printing files should be in .stl format, but .obj files may also be accepted.

Materials

Materials kept on hand are PLA in a variety of colours, and support materials like breakaway material and PVA. There may be a material charge for using the printer if there is a large amount of material being used in printing your model(s) and depending on the purpose of the print (i.e., personal vs. academic). Any potential costs are determined prior to printing to allow for users to make an informed choice about costs. Users may bring their own materials and use the printer without cost however all materials must be approved in advance.

Timeline

Timelines will vary depending on the size of the print, purpose of the print, and what other projects are already in the queue. Small prints may take a few minutes to few hours to complete, while large prints can take numerous days. Generally, smaller projects should be completed within a week. A timeline will be established during the consultation.

Print Submission Dropbox

Once you have a file for printing, it can be submitted for review and approval through our Ultimaker dropbox. The model will be reviewed and you will be notified for the estimated time it will take to print you item(s).

Render on personal device

The Odette Critical Making Space uses the name brand slicer as created by Ultimaker. Using the exact same software allows for the highest level of integration for the printer for accurate estimates of print renders.

Cura, can be downloaded directly from the Ultimaker website and utilized for material use/price estimates.
