Copyright guidance for Trent faculty, students and staff

Print Materials

In general, you may reproduce a short excerpt, up to 10% of a print work or a single chapter, article, encyclopedia entry or newspaper article from a collection for educational purposes, on the premises of Trent University or within Blackboard LMS, for an audience consisting primarily of students enrolled in a course.

Remember to cite the copied work correctly, including author, title and source in the citation.

Permissible:

  • Scholarly cited quotations using a recognized style guide (APA, Chicago, MLA, etc.)
  • Reproducing a short excerpt of the book
    • No more than 10%
    • Or one chapter

If the book is a compilation of works (essays, poems, short stories), you may:

  • Reproduce one work from the entire book

Non-Permissible:

  • Reproducing more than one chapter or entry
  • Reproducing more than 10% of the book
  • Quoting from the book without proper citation

Before Using:

  • Include title, author, and source of the excerpt in any reproductions
  • Consider using the Library's Course Reading Support services to share work with students

 

The following applies to scholarly articles found in print journals, entries found in physical encyclopedias or dictionaries, or articles found in print newspapers and magazines.

Permissible:

  • Reproducing one article/entry from the entire work, for example:
    • One article from a journal volume
    • One article from a print newspaper
    • One entry from an encyclopedia
  • Quoting short passages or sentences or statements
    • Properly cite using a recommended citation style guide (APA, Chicago, MLA, etc.)

Before Using:

  • Include title, author, and source of the excerpt in any reproductions
  • Consider using the Library's Course Reading Support services to share work with students
