ESL Research Guide

A guide to library resources for ESL students.

Core 1-2

At this early stage in the ESL program, no library research is required.

Students should learn basic information about using the library.  Instructors can request a 20-minute tour, which will cover:

  • library cards
  • signing out and returning books
  • where to find things in the library
  • photocopying and printing
  • library rules
  • stacks and call numbers
  • journals - current and bound

Instructors should book the tour with a librarian and bring the class to the library.  A worksheet may be prepared by the instructor.

To book a tour, instructors should email libraryhelp@trentu.ca with preferred times.

Core 3

At this level, students begin to use some simple web resources for research. It's time to learn about the types of information available through the public internet, and to evaluate what you find.

The Library website provides some tutorials for this.

There is no library instruction provided at this level.
