Searching the Library Catalogue for Books

When you want to find books in the Trent Library, search the Library Catalogue. There's an online tutorial available to tell you about the Library Catalogue.

Use a keyword search to find items on a topic.

  • For example, to find books on "the sociological effects of technololgy" you might search for sociolog$ and technology.
  • Or, you might choose a more specific topic, like cell phone$.
  • To improve your results, use an Advanced Search and truncate your terms.

Terminology Notes:

The Library Catalogue uses LCSH (subject headings) in most records, to help us identify items of interest. These can be general or specific, depending on your topic.

  • Sociological aspects is a term used with almost any topic. Eg:
    • Hockey--Canada--Sociological aspects.
  • Sociology of is often used as the beginning of a term. Eg.:
    • Sociology of disability.
  • Sociology is a general term applied to books. Eg.:
    • Sociology--History
    • Sociology--Research Methods.

The best way to find books is usually to use sociolog$ and one or two other significant terms for your topic.  Eg. sociolog$ and 'substance abuse'.

When you choose books, be careful to look for those with a sociological approach to the topic, rather than historical, psychological, or social work.
